Newsoms team prevails

Newsoms 10U fast-pitch girls’ softball team recently won a post-season tournament in Wakefield, defeating Capron 13-3 in the finals.

Newsoms was 19-1 for the season to become regular season champions and also won a pre-season tournament held in Capron.

As for the post-season tournament, it opened with Wakefield defeating Capron and Sedly defeating Courtland. Top-seeded Newsoms defeated Ivor to earn its way to the championship game.

On day two, Capron defeated Sedley 6-5 and advanced to the championship game against Newsoms; Newsoms won 13-3.

Pitcher Megan Vincent and catcher Brittany Cobb led Newsoms’ defense. Vincent struck out eight batters and Cobb threw out four at first.

Scoring for Capron were Ashlyn Edwards and Maddie Simmons in the third inning and Allison Matthews in the fifth on a solo home run.

On offense, none of Newsoms’ batters were struck out by Capron Pitcher Kellie Ferguson, who had pitched the entire game against Sedley. Ferguson walked four Newsoms batters.

Also for Newsoms, Alexis Darden and Cameron Francis had two hits each. Diamond Jones, Sarah Williams, Emma Drake, Claire Watson and Kamora Elex had one hit a piece.

“Every girl on the team, whether a veteran or a rookie, contributed to the success of the team this season,” said Head Coach Cynthia Cobb. “Teamwork was a big emphasis this year. One person cannot win the game. It takes everyone to contribute to the team.”

Cobb also commended assistant coaches Ronnie Vincent, Neil Drake and Heath Bradshaw for the team’s success.

“This was a very successful team, going19-1 for the season,” Cobb said. “Winning the pre-season,

regular season and post-season championships is something all of us and the community can be proud of.”
