Colts win championship

PETERSBURG—The 15- and 16-year-old Wakefield-Waverly Colt Baseball Team recently won the Appomattox River League Tournament at Petersburg Sports Complex.

In the first playoff game against the No. 4 seeded Matoaca Gold team, Wakefield-Waverly won 5-3 by scoring 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning with key hits by Carson Camp and Ty Johnson.

The next game was against No. 1 seeded Colonial Heights, who had lost one game during the season. Wakefield-Waverly won this game 10-4, knocking out Colonial Heights behind the stellar pitching of Jimmy Rogers, Timmy Thomas and Hunter Haywood.

In the championship game, Wakefield-Waverly defeated No. 2 seeded Manchester 5-4. The game ended with Manchester having the bases loaded, and the Colts’ P.J. Jones making a fine running catch for the third out.

Also leading to this win were fine defensive plays by Wade Parham and Martin Hellyer.

The Wakefield-Waverly Colt team made the championship run behind the strong pitching of Rogers, Josh Clarke, Thomas and Haywood, and a strong defensive effort by the entire team coupled with some timely hits.

The Appomattox River League consists of eight teams including Colonial Heights, Manchester, Matoaca Gold, Matoaca Red, Petersburg, Prince George, Hopewell and Wakefield-Waverly.

Wakefield-Waverly finished the regular season in fifth place with a 6-8 record, and with its tournament wins, had a final overall record of 9-8.

Wakefield-Waverly Colt team members were Johnson, Jones, Jared Latham and Delmonte “Coots” Turner, all from Sussex Central; Thomas, Hunter Seward and Jatwi Black, all from Surry; Wesley Barnes, Matt Nixon and Camp, all from Southampton Academy; and Kaleb Atkins, Clarke, Haywood, Hellyer, Matt Irving, Anthony Martinette, Parham and Rogers, all of Tidewater Academy.

Coaches were Rodney Thomas, Tim Nixon, Quinton Hellyer and Paul Rogers Jr.
