ISLE OF WIGHT—The pilot of a glider plane was unhurt after crashing during an emergency landing Friday in central Isle of Wight County, State Police said.

Michael Henry Creamer, 63, of Newport News, took the plane down into some trees, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya. There were no other occupants.

Anaya said the glider took off from Garner Glider Airport on Iron Mine Springs Road just before 3 p.m. Shortly after takeoff, the plane malfunctioned, and the battery caught on fire.

The Garner Glider Airport is near Iron Mine Springs and Orbit roads.

Anaya said Creamer won’t face any charges.
