SUFFOLK—Suffolk Police have charged a 19-year-old man with allegedly killing a newspaper carrier last July 8.

Christopher Jonta Artis of Suffolk was arrested Wednesday on capital murder, robbery and firearms charges for the murder of John Price Jr., 50.

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper carrier was killed on Brewer Avenue about 4 a.m. while making deliveries. Police responding to calls of shots fired found Price lying in the roadway, with his van nearby. The driver’s door was open and the engine was running, police said.

Detectives say the murder was a “crime of opportunity,” city spokeswoman Debbie George said.

The initial investigation yielded several leads, George said, but additional information was needed to complete it. The case was reassigned to the Cold Case Unit.

Artis was arrested without incident and is being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
