FRANKLIN—The Stronger Woman, a new non-profit group in Franklin whose mission is to develop permanent mental, physical, emotional and mental strength through athletic camps and clinics, will sponsor a softball camp for local girls 8 through 13.

The camp will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, July 12, through Wednesday, July 14, at Ivor Recreation League Field.

Tryouts for three traveling girls’ softball teams hosted by the organization will be held at the same location the following week.

Tryouts for the 10U team will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 21, and for 12U and 14U teams from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 23, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 24.

The makeup date for tryouts for 10U is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, and for 12U and 14U, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 7.

Steph Wood, chief executive officer and founder of The Stronger Woman, has operated a similar business nationally and internationally for seven years. Since moving to Franklin three years ago, she has started a non-profit organization to offer programs to local youth. The softball camp and traveling teams are Wood’s first local effort.

So far 10 girls have signed up for the softball camp. The $90 fee will cover the cost of providing a pitching coach and a former college softball coach from Florida at the camp.

“We want to teach the girls life skills and motivate them,” Wood said. “We want to give them higher expectations of themselves, both on and off the field.”

She is also offering programs because she doesn’t believes there’s enough for girls to do in the area.

Other upcoming programs will include an Iron Woman Ministry, which works with single mothers who want to stay in shape, and an after-school program for the fall.

Busineses and groups sponsoring The Stronger Woman include Bobby’s Tire and Muffler, Fred’s Restaurant and Mackans Office Equipment, all in Franklin; Winning Edge and Sluggers in Suffolk; Line Drive Hitting and Grayson & Emma’s Garden Spot, both in Courtland, and Ivor Athletic Association.
