Colorful displays of patriotism

The following events are scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend in the Western Tidewater region:

Sedley

The annual Fourth of July Celebration sponsored by Sedley Recreation Association will be held Saturday, July 3.

The day begins at 9 a.m. with registration for the noon car show at Rogers Memorial Park next to Sedley Volunteer Fire Department. Sedley Ruritan Club sponsors the event.

At 9:30 a.m. there will be a Veterans’ Recognition Program at Sedley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall sponsored by Sedley Woman’s Club.

Registration for the Ride for Freedom/Poker Run will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Sedley ballpark. Registration closes at noon for the 1 p.m. event. The cost is $15 for one rider or $25 for two. For information, contact Harvey Hubbard at 562-7195. Motorcyclists can also ride in the parade.

The parade sponsored by Sedley Volunteer Fire Department begins at 11 a.m. Lineup is at 10 at Grace Memorial Methodist Church.

Also at 11 a.m. signups at the ball field will begin for the basketball, horseshoe and corn hole tournaments.

At noon, there will be a fire truck competition at the fire station.

From noon to 6 p.m. there will be pony rides at Bleu Fox Stables.

A flag raising by Boy Scouts will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Roger’s Memorial Park.

Silver Street Band will perform from 5 to 9 p.m. at the ball field.

At 6 p.m. the fire department ball game will be held at the ball field followed by the Rhythm Sensation Cloggers and a co-ed softball game, both at 7 at the ball field.

Food will be available throughout the day.

Barton’s Museum will be open 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. except during the parade.

Fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m.

Newsoms

The Fourth of July Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, on Main Street followed by a picnic at Newsoms Community Center and Ball Field.

Parade signup begins at 4:30 at Newsoms Baptist Church.

The picnic will include live entertainment and music by Shiloh Grass at 6:30. Games will include kickball, water balloon toss, sack race and more.

The Old Timers baseball game will begin at 8 p.m. at Newsoms ball field. For more information call Norman Lee at 654-6307.

Windsor

Participants for the Children’s Patriotic Bike Parade should meet at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the end of Duke Street. Children through age 9 can decorate their bikes, wagons, big wheels and strollers in red, white and blue. Helmets are required. The parade begins at 6.

Fireworks will be held at 9:30 p.m. at Windsor High School.

Boykins

An holiday celebration will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at Raymond Parker Park. Music will be performed by Wayne Cook. Hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks will be available.

Fireworks will be shot off at dusk.

Smithfield

A fireworks show will be held at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at Clontz.
