Newsoms defends softball title

NEWSOMS—Newsoms Girls 16U softball team defended its title, winning the end-of-season tournament for a second year last weekend at home.

The girls defeated Wakefield 11-7 in the final game to take the championship and post a 14-1 season record and league-winning 11-1 record.

“The game was intense and very exciting,” said head coach Brent Edwards, who is assisted by Robin and Jimmy Pinner, Mike Lewis and statistician Brenda Reed. “Newsoms has come along way this year finishing first in the season and pulling off a great victory in the championship. Thank you to our parents and supporters who show up to every game to cheer us on.

On June 25, Newsoms beat Capron 13-6. Ashlee Buehner pitched 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks, and gave up 9 hits.

Chelsea Pinner led the team at bat, going 4-for-4 with a homerun, double, 2 singles and 4 RBIs.

Other big batters were Ashlee Buehner with a homerun and 2 RBIs, Kaylee Harris with a triple and RBI.

Demone Brickhouse had a single and an RBI; Brittany Johnson, Shelby Spencer and Amber Gwaltney each had two singles and an RBI. Rebecca Lewis had a double and 2 RBIs.

On Saturday, Newsoms defeated Wakefield 7 to 3.

Buehner pitched 6 innings with 10 strikeouts and 6 walks, and gave up 6 hits.

Pinner had 2 singles, 1 double and an RBI; Harris had 3 singles and 2 RBIs; Buehner had 2 singles and an RBI, Johnson had a triple and an RBI; and Spencer had 2 singles and 2 RBIs.

This win qualified Newsoms for the championship game against Wakefield on Sunday.

Buehner pitched 7 innings with 8 strikeouts and 9 walks, and gave up 8 hits.

Leah Burgess went 3-for-3 with 1 single, 1 double and 1 triple and 2 RBIs. Brickhouse had 2 singles and 2 RBIs; Pinner had 1 single, 1 double and 3 RBIs; Lewis had a single; Buehner had 2 doubles and an RBI; Johnson had a double and 2 RBIs; and Taylor Ward had a single and an RBI.

Wakefield’s Falon Williams pitched 7 innings with 7 strikeouts and 8 walks, and gave up 12 hits. Cora Ellis had a homerun; Tiasha Hill had a double; Tyler Stephenson and Kelly Stallard had two singles each; and Cary Beahm and Williams each had a single.

As for the season, Buehner pitched every game, striking out 89 batters and walking 52.

Those with the top five batting averages were Pinner 604, Buehner 479, Brickhouse 408, Johnson 362 and Matthews 323.

Ward, Taylor Everett and Gwaltney were newcomers to the team. Brickhouse and Johnson moved up to the 16U from the 13U team. The age range for 16U is 14 to 16.

For Carla Matthews, Leah Burgess and Spencer, it is their last year of county ball.
