PDCCC Kids College offers on-the-job adventures to students

Paul D. Camp Community College Kids College 2010 began this week.

Running every week thereafter through Aug. 13, more than 40 different classes in four areas are being featured. Classes include:

Art Without Brushes

Meeting Monday, June 28, through Friday, July 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., this class taught by Stephanie Hancock is designed for rising second- through fifth-graders using nontraditional materials to create art without using a pencil or brush. Tuition is $80.

Birds, Bees, Butterflies and Trees:

Junior Master Gardening Camp

In partnership with Western Tidewater Master Gardeners and designed for rising second- through fifth-graders, the camp is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday, June 28, through Friday, July 2. The program will feature crafts, cooking and a fieldtrip to local gardens. Participants will learn about everything from herbs to flowers to bees. Tuition is $25.

Riverkeeper Adventures

In partnership with the Blackwater Nottoway Riverkeeper Program, this option features an eco-cruise on the rivers facilitated by Riverkeeper Jeff Turner. Three sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. are scheduled for Thursdays. Sessions I and II are July 8 and 29, respectively, for rising second- through fourth-graders; and Aug. 12 for rising fifth- through eighth-graders. Tuition is $20.

Through the Looking Glass of Nursing

Designed for rising sixth- through eighth-graders, this class explores different nursing career paths with healthcare presenters, class discussions, demonstrations and hands-on exercises. Participants will learn about nursing careers while they handle simulated nursing situations and complete CPR training and certification. Taught by the PDCCC Nursing Program Staff, the class meets 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, through Thursday, July 22. Tuition is $45.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Taught by The Tidewater News staff, this class designed for fifth- through eighth-graders invites children to create the first edition of the Kids College News. Participants will learn how to write a news story, interview sources, take photographs, sell advertising and design a newspaper page. They will also travel to The Tidewater News and see their work in print. Offered in partnership with The Tidewater News, the class meets Monday, July 19, through Thursday, July 22, from 9 am to noon. Tuition is $40.

Calling Dr. Doolittle:

Pre-Veterinary Science Sampler

For rising sophomores to seniors considering a career with animals, this offering addresses a career in veterinary medicine with a hands-on introduction to working with animals. The class will meet 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Bear Path Acres Animal Education Center. Tuition is $25.

Clowin’ Around/Balloon Art

Designed for rising second- through sixth graders, Clowin’ Around meets 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 21. Participants will learn clown tricks, gags and how to apply clown makeup. Following this class, Balloon Art for the same age group will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Both classes are taught by Pat the Clown. Tuition for each is $20.
