Attempted bank robber pleads guilty

COURTLAND—A former Chesapeake police officer has admitted to an attempted bank robbery in Newsoms.
Richard Eugene Boyce III, 33, of Chesapeake pleaded guilty to felony charges of attempted robbery and wearing a mask in public in Southampton County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
The charges stem from December at BB&T bank on General Thomas Highway. Boyce tried to enter the bank wearing a mask, but was denied entry by tellers.
Boyce remains free on bond and will be sentenced Oct. 7.
