YORK—Southampton High School junior sprinter Ronnie Powell took two titles during the Virginia High School League Group AA State Track Meet in Harrisonburg on Friday.

Powell won the 200-meter dash in 25.38 and the 100-meter dash in 12.48.

“It was just great,” said SHS Coach Alfred Charity. “It was good for her, good for the school and good for the program. She has been working hard for the last couple of years and was up against some good competition.”

Finishing second in the 200-meter dash was Destiny Simmons from Robert E. Lee High school with a time of 25.64. Taking second in the 100-meter dash was Mayhownia Layne of Eastern View High School with a time of 12.73.

Last year, Powell placed second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100. She also competed in both events as a freshman,

For next season, Charity hopes to see Powell compete for the state title in the 300-meter hurdles. Last year, she qualified for the state meet in the event.

“We might see how well she can do next year,” Charity said.

Southampton senior Andre Rawls also qualified for the state meet after placing sixth in both the 100-meter dash and long jump.

“He pulled a hamstring on his first jump and couldn’t compete for the rest of the meet,” Charity said.

Rawls had a qualifying time of 11.24 in the 100 and a leap of 20 feet, 8.75 inches in the long jump to make it to the state meet.
