Lawrence “Larry” Neff Powell
COLUMBIA, S.C.—A memorial service for Mr. Lawrence “Larry” Neff Powell, 62, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock, Friday, June 4, 2010, at Northeast United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kevin Gorry officiating. Members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30, Thursday evening, in the Education Building of the church. The family requests that friends dress casually for both services. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to the church, 4000 Hardscrabble Rd, Columbia, SC 29223.
Mr. Powell died Monday, June 1, 2010. Born in Suffolk, VA on June 9, 1947, he was a son of the late James Vernon Powell, Jr. and Barbara Lee Ware Powell. Larry was a 1965 graduate of Norfolk Academy, the University of Virginia, and went on to earn his MBA from George Washington University. Larry was currently pursuing an additional degree in educational research from the University of South Carolina. He had worked with Union Camp for 34 years as a chemical engineer, and was a member of Northeast United Methodist Church and the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 33 years, Dr. Tammie Shockley Powell; daughter, Laura Hardy Powell; mother-in-law, Avis B. Shockley; brother-in-law, O. Barry Shockley and wife, Diana B. Shockley; aunt, Sara M. Ware; nephew, Michael Shockley; niece, Michelle Burch; and his beloved pet, Bailey. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his uncle, James G. Ware, Jr. and father-in-law, Martin J. Shockley. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
