SMITHFIELD—The assistant principal at Windsor Middle School is facing a misdemeanor sexual battery charge after a woman accused him of groping her at a Smithfield home.
Timmie Edwards, 61, of Smithfield was arrested and released on May 28 for the alleged May 15 incident, according to Smithfield Police Lt. Kurt Beach.
“We were able to contact him and he voluntarily came down,” Beach said.
The alleged victim filed the charges. Police were not called when the alleged offense occurred nor did they investigate, Beach said.
The alleged victim said in the complaint she went to a rental home Edwards owns on South Church Street in Smithfield to check it out. Edwards allegedly made inappropriate sexual advances and groped the 30-year-old.
“He did not have a reason nor permission to touch me in any kind of way,” she wrote in a criminal complaint on May 20. “I gave him no indication that I wanted to be touched, and there were no sexual gestures being made either.”
The alleged victim wrote in the complaint that she repeatedly told Edwards she was married.
“That didn’t stop him either,” she wrote.
Isle of Wight County School officials weren’t available to comment Thursday. The division’s policy manual states that an employee “may be suspended” if charged with a felony or certain misdemeanors, including sexual assault.
Edwards will be arraigned on July 29 in Isle of Wight County General District Court.
