Girls’ team awarded

WILLIAMBURG—Southampton Academy’s Lindsay Raulston received the All Academic Award during the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament at McCormack Nagelsen Tennis Center.

In addition, coaches Joann Gatten and Tammy Porter were selected Virginia Commonwealth Conference Girls’ Tennis Coaches of The Year.

The girls’ tennis team finished second in the conference with an overall record of 5-3.

At the tournament, Raulston, playing the No. 1 seed finished second; senior Gabby Gatten, No. 2 seed finished second; freshman Barclay Gatten, No. 3 seed placed first; junior Jessica Porter, No. 4 seed tied for second; No. 5 seed senior Jessica Ruffin tied for second; and junior Ginny Taylor finished third.

The Southampton Academy doubles teams also had winning records.

Other team members were Courtney Beltrami, Megan Dail, Ester Eom and Megan Drewry. They played exhibition matches throughout the season.

“Losing three seniors will be tough but thankfully we have lots of interest and enthusiasm from the younger girls,” said Joann Gatten.
