FRANKLIN—Verta Jackson will likely be reappointed to her seat on the Franklin School Board when the City Council meets in June.
Jackson, whose term ends June 30, was the only person nominated for the board’s Ward 5 seat at a public hearing Monday night.
“She’s highly qualified,” said resident James Riddick Sr., who nominated Jackson for a new three-year term. Riddick told the council about Jackson’s work experience and educational background.
When no other nominees were presented, Mayor Jim Councill asked if council members wanted to interview Jackson.
“If I remember correctly, when we’ve had only one and we’re knowledgeable of them we have not had an interview,” said Vice Mayor Raystine Johnson.
Council agreed that an interview was not necessary, however the appointment couldn’t be made Monday because city code requires at least seven days between the public hearing and appointment.
“We will take care of that at our next meeting,” Councill said.
Jackson’s seat was the only one up for appointment this year.
Five seats on the seven-member school board were filled last summer, and the Ward 3 seat held by Johnetta Nichols is up for appointment next year.
