Two titles for TA

Tiny Tidewater Academy is accomplishing big things in athletics.

The Wakefield school won its second state championship of the school year last weekend when Coach Brent Lowe’s squad beat Kenston Forest in the Virginia Independent Schools Division 3 softball final in Petersburg.

It is the second consecutive state championship for the Lady Warriors, who were led by pitching ace Hayes Holdsworth and offensive stars Marianna Stephenson, Jordan Clarke and Samantha Spain.

Holdsworth, who didn’t lose a game in the pitching circle, is headed for Charleston Southern University. Clarke will play college ball for Campbell University.

The softball team’s state title follows close on the heels of a state championship by the boys’ basketball team, which knocked off rival Isle of Wight Academy for the VIS Division 3 title in March.

Coach Walter Westbrook’s hoops team is a perennial power in Virginia’s private-school ranks.

In addition to their on-the-field exploits, TA’s athletic teams are roundly respected for their sportsmanship.

We commend the school’s athletes and coaches for their championships and for representing Western Tidewater well.
