Franklin athlete qualifies for State Tournament

Franklin High School’s Justin Grant qualified in the 100-yard dash for the June 5 State Tournament during Tuesday’s Tri-Rivers District Track Meet.

Grant was a triple winner at the district meet, also taking first in the 200-meter dash and triple jump. He took second in the long jump.

Franklin’s Shaleetta Hicks also was a triple winner, taking firsts in the high and triple jumps and 400-meter dash and qualified for the May 27 Region A Track Meet at West Point High School. She also took fourth in the long jump.

Grant and Hicks received the Best Performer of the Year Awards.

Ten additional girls and boys qualified during Tuesday’s meet for the Region A Track Meet.

They included second-place finishers Shaquan Cook in the triple jump and 400-meter dash, and Diamond Bowers in the shot put.

Third-place individual finishers were Justin Everett in the shot put; Reshard Sumblin in the 100-meter dash, and long and triple jumps; Mercedes Williams in the 200-meter dash, and long and triple jumps; and Markele Wiggins in the 400-meter dash.

Members of the qualifying third-place relay teams were Hicks, Rachel Sing, Paul Buck and Williams for the 4- by 100-meter and Cook, Wiggins, Lawrence Parham and Josh Walker for the 4- by 400-meter.

Fourth-place finishers were Williams in the 100-meter dash and Sumblin in the long jump. Sumblin also took fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Sixth-place finishers were Kiara Banks in the 300-meter hurdles, Cook in the long jump and Sumblin in the triple jump.
