Tidewater Academy wins state softball title

PETERSBURG—Tidewater Academy won its second consecutive Virginia Independent Schools Division III softball title, defeating Kenston Forest School 7-4 on Friday.

The top-seeded Lady Warriors finished the season 20-2.

Tidewater defeated Broadwater Academy 7-0 in the semifinals on Thursday to qualify for the championship game.

Winning pitcher Hayes Holdsworth, who is 11-0 for the season, gave up two hits, struck out 14 batters and allowed 1 walk.

S. Sharpley was tagged with the loss for Broadwater.

For Tidewater, Jordan Clarke went 3-for 3, including two doubles. She scored 1 run, had 3 RBIs and stole 1 base. Samantha Spain hit a solo, over-the-fence homerun, while Marianna Stephenson went 2-for-4, with 1 double, 1 run, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Holdsworth was 1-for-2, scoring 2 runs and stealing 2 bases at the plate.

Tidewater scored 1 run in the second, 3 runs in the fifth, and 3 runs in the sixth inning on 12 hits and committed 0 errors. Broadwater had 2 hits in the game.
