Tidewater Academy won its second consecutive state softball championship Friday with a 7-4 victory over Kenston Forest School in the Virginia Independent Schools Division 3 title game.

Coach Brent Lowe’s Lady Warriors, 20-2, scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed.

Pitching ace Hayes Holdsworth, who hurled TA to victory in Thursday’s semifinals, finished a perfect season by pitching into the fourth inning and getting her 12th win. She also contributed a couple of hits offensively to Tidewater’s 10-hit attack.

Marianna Stephenson paced TA at the plate with four hits, including a solo home run to lead off the game. She also scored three runs and stole two bases. Taylor Warner added a double and a single, scored a run and drove in a couple.

After Stephenson’s early homer, Holdsworth, Warner and Rebecca Renney also hit safely in the first inning to fuel the Lady Warriors’ early outburst.

A Stephenson single and a Kenston Forest error produced two more runs for TA in the second inning.

Tidewater added an insurance run in the fourth when Stephenson singled and later scored on a passed ball.

Warner came on in relief of Holdworth in the fourth inning with two outs and the bases loaded to get a pop-up in the infield to end the inning. She finished the game, earning her first save.

Stephenson, Holdsworth and catcher Jordan Clarke were named to the VIS Division 3 All-State team.
