NEWSOMS—Gwen Grizzard Vick, 75, died May 12, 2010, at Consulate Healthcare Center in Windsor. She was born in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Corinne Cleek Grizzard and Joshua Jack Grizzard. She attended Boykins High School, graduated from Saint Mary’s School and Junior College in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated from Florida State University.
Mrs. Vick was first superintendant of the Franklin City Welfare Department and retired as director of the Southampton County Department of Social Services. She was a member of the Virginia League of Social Workers, a board member of the Franklin-Southampton United Way, Franklin Music Study Club, and a board member of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia. Mrs. Vick was an administrative board member, Sunday school teacher, and organist at Newsoms United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 37 years, Peter Marks Vick; one daughter, Catherine Smith Jackson (Dick) of Fredericksburg; one son, Richard Byron Smith (Alice) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Ashley Smith, Stephen Jackson, and Deborah Jackson; one great-grandchild, Gabriel Abbott; two brothers, Jack Cleek Grizzard of Hagerstown, Md., and Richard “Dick” Grizzard (Sarah) of Boykins; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14 at Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darwin Edwards and the Rev. William Dickson Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 pm at the funeral home and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, Va. 23502 or Newsoms United Methodist Church Building Fund, P O Box 297, Newsoms, Va. 23874. The family would like to thank Consulate Healthcare in Windsor for the exceptional care they have provided for Mrs. Vick over the last 3 and1/2 years.
