SMITHFIELD—A Virginia State Police trooper remained hospitalized Tuesday after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a pickup on Old Stage Highway at 11:49 a.m. Monday.

Trooper M.A. Guyer was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotten.

Guyer was acting as a motorcycle escort assigned to the Law Enforcement United bicycle tour when he collided with the driver of a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup that had stopped to turn left. The driver was only identified as a 55-year-old Smithfield man.

The bicycle tour included federal, state and local law enforcement officers en route to the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, memorial at the Pentagon.

Guyer’s motorcycle had its lights and sirens activated at the time of the crash, and he was attempting to get around the pickup to stop traffic at an intersection for the safety of the bicyclists.

No one else was hurt.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed against the driver of the pickup.
