COURTLAND—More than 46 percent of Boykins voters turned out for Tuesday’s election, where 12 people ran for five Town Council seats.

Only one incumbent was re-elected.

According to unofficial election results, challenger Carolyn Modlin was elected to the council with 136 votes. Vice Mayor Linda Beatty was re-elected with 113 votes. Others winners were challengers Samuel Drewry Sr., Gary Baugham and F.W. “Freddy” Felts, who received 112, 101 and 97 votes, respectively.

Incumbents Michael Gadsby and Amy Gautier were defeated. Rhonda Mathias and Mary Elizabeth Washington did not run for re-election.

“I appreciated the support the people gave me and the encouragement,” Modlin said. “I would like to see us listen and represent the citizens — and take into consideration the needs of the people. I think we have a good little town, and we need to keep working to constantly try to make it better.”

“I was very surprised by the turnout we had today,” Modlin added. “I didn’t think it would be that high.”

Mayor Spier Edwards, who ran unopposed, said he looks forward to working with the new council.

“I think we’ve got a good council,” he said Tuesday. “I was satisfied with the way all of the candidates ran and the way they handled themselves. The people that are coming on are experienced people that know things about the town, and I think everybody will work together in trying to get things accomplished.”

Modlin, Drewry, Baugham and Felts had all served previously on the council.

“I wish them well,” Gadsby said of the new council. “I’ll continue to be there to help them any way I can.”

Elsewhere, incumbent mayors in Capron, Ivor and Newsoms ran unopposed. Harold Preston Futrell Jr. was elected mayor of Branchville, and Danny Williams will become the new mayor of Courtland. Both Futrell and Williams ran unopposed.

In Branchville, Nancy Barrett and Beronica Casper each received 23 votes for that community’s six-member Town Council. Susan Phelps and Kelly Joe Ray each got 22 votes and Roger Hinson and Franklin Phelps each polled 21. They were all elected.

Lundy Sadler II fell one vote short of being elected, receiving 20 votes.

Jerry Morgan received 37 write-in votes to win one of the two District B seats on the Courtland Town Council. Stanley Piersa Jr. was on the ballot and won the other seat unopposed.

In Windsor, Carlita J. Richardson was elected the first female mayor of the Town of Windsor on Tuesday. She ran for the office unopposed. Incumbent Mayor Marvin A. Crocker Jr. did not seek re-election.

Incumbent Wesley F. Garris was re-elected to the Town Council, and will serve with N. Macon Edwards III and Patty S. Flemming.
