The Southampton Academy Raiders Golf team finished the 2010 season in fourth-place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Golf Tournament at The Cardinal Club in Fort Lee.

In the tournament, the Raiders were led by Ryan Bakay, Marlin McClelland, Michael Bunch, John Dekarske, Madison Trumble and Storm Gray.

Bakay led the Raiders on the front nine by shooting a 44, while Bunch shot a 49 on the back nine to lead his team.

The Raiders finished the regular season third in the VCC with a 3-6 record.

The team was led by McClelland, who averaged a 45. Bakay averaged a 46, Gray 53, Bunch 55, and Dekarske and Trumble 56. Fox played in one match and shot a 59.

“I am going to miss my two seniors, Ryan Bakay and John Dekarske,” said second-year head coach David Gibbs. “I am proud of the way that the team came together and put in the work necessary to be successful.”

“We started golf in early March, and besides the returning players, we had some newcomers that were a real surprise to the team,” Gibbs said. “This is a great sign for the future of golf at Southampton Academy.”

The boys practiced rain or shine.

“Although we did not finish the season like we wanted to, we made many strides in the right direction,” Gibbs said. “Last season we finished with a team scoring average of 213, while we finished this season with a team scoring average of 197. I am so proud of the players for their hard work, determination, and overall character that each of them displayed throughout the season.”

Other members are Thomas Fox, Daniel Crumpler and Justin Smith.
