FRANKLIN—A judge has denied bond for a Franklin woman arrested last week after her 7-month-old baby was found to have cocaine in her system.

Megan Banton, 21, appeared in Franklin Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Wednesday.

According to Franklin police Lt. Tim Whitt, police officers accompanied the Department of Social Services to remove two children from Banton’s Artis Street home last week.

The children subsequently received medical examinations. Cocaine was found in the system of the baby, the younger of the two. Police were notified and began an investigation. A search of the home revealed items consistent with narcotics use.

Banton remains at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

William Jones, who lives near Banton’s Artis Street home, said he doesn’t know her, but it’s a sad situation for the children.

“I don’t know what to say,” Jones said. “I just hope it doesn’t happen to another one.”
