R. Scott Carr of Suffolk has earned the 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy.

Carr was nominated by Paul D. Camp Community College. The award was recently given at a luncheon at the Country Club of Virginia. It honors the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges, as well as the system’s statewide foundation.

Recipients will have a scholarship named after them and awarded next fall to a student attending their community college. The scholarships are funded largely by the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation.

Carr is the managing director of investments, leading the Carr Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors in the Suffolk office, which he established. He has hosted educational workshops for individuals and corporations, volunteered as an instructor at PDCCC and local elementary schools and spoken at Wells Fargo Advisors training programs.

A member of the college’s Foundation Board since 2005, Carr is in his second term as president. He is also chairman of the Executive Committee and serves on the Board’s Investment Committee, which he chaired for two years.

Carr has committed one of the largest gifts from a board member to PDCCC’s first Major Gifts Campaign, according to Dr. Patsy Joyner, vice president for Institutional Advancement and executive director/secretary for the Foundation Board. Carr also is a regular contributor to the Foundation’s Annual Fund and Golf Tournament fundraisers.

“During his tenure, he has provided youth, energy and motivation – taking the lead in fund-raising efforts,” Joyner said. “His contributions also include providing wise counsel and direction on investment matters and chairing the Foundation’s Major Gifts Campaign Management Committee.”

Carr and his wife, Heather, are the parents of Hope, Miller and Hattie Belle.
