SA edges Tidewater Acad. on diamond

COURTLAND—Wesley Barnes led the Raider offense with three hits and scored both runs, and Garrett Smith and Cameron Ray combined on the mound to hold Tidewater Academy to one run in a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Southampton Academy here Monday.

Southampton Academy scored one run in the first inning when Barnes reached first base on a single. Barnes scored when John Hinkle hit a single to right center field.

Tidewater Academy tied the score in the top of the third. Wade Parham led off the inning with a single. He reached second base on an infield error and scored the Warriors’ only run on a sacrifice fly by Casey Rickmond.

The Raiders responded in the bottom of the third. Barnes hit a double to right field. He then stole third base before scoring on a soft single by Smith to give the Raiders the lead of 2-1.

Tidewater Academy had one more scoring chance when it loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but Ray got the last batter to fly out to right field to end the game.

Smith pitched four strong innings and Ray finished the final three innings for the Raiders to outduel James Price for the Warriors. The Raiders are now 4-3 for the season.

SA plays at home Thursday against Surry High School before taking a week off for spring break.
