Alton E. Owen Sr.
JARRATT—Alton Feild Owen, Sr., 78, of Jarratt, died peacefully Sunday, March 28, 2010 surrounded by his family after a short, courageous battle with non hodgkins lymphoma. He was son of the late Charles Feild and Nannie Lou Bennett Owen and was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Kay Noffsinger Owen; three daughters, Ann Owen Dix and husband, Todd of Jarratt, Cindy Owen Smith and husband, Troy of Chester and Linda Owen Jarrett and husband, Dave of Glen Allen; three sons, Alton F. Owen, Jr. and wife, Janet of Emporia, Mark T. Owen and wife, Amy, also of Emporia and Keith B. Owen, Sr. and wife, Bethany of Memphis, TN; thirteen grandchildren: Kirsti, Lauren, Murphy, Meredith, Nick, Bennett, Taylor, Maddy, Alex, Cole, Bennett, Jr., Sanford and Feild; two brothers, James J. Owen and wife, Betsy of Blacksburg and Robert T. “Bobby” Owen and wife, Margie of Jarratt; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie P. Owen of Jarratt and Deborah R. Owen of Emporia and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Owen was a lifelong member of High Hills Baptist Church in Jarratt where he had served as Chairman of the Deacons and as Sunday School Teacher.
He was an active member of his community and served on Town Council and as Mayor for over twenty years. He was President of Owen Ford, Inc. in Jarratt and his dealership received the Ford Distinguished Service Award, given for superior customer service, every year but one that he was in business.
The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd in Jarratt. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at High Hills Baptist Church with interment to follow at Owen Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to High Hills Baptist Church Owen Scholarship Fund or the High Hills Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 296, Jarratt, Virginia 23867.
