After hearing some encouraging budget news from Superintendent Michael McPherson, the Isle of Wight County School Board voted Thursday afternoon to keep Windsor Middle School open next year.

The vote was taken during a budget work session.

An earlier plan to close Windsor Middle School and send its students to Carrsville Elementary and Windsor High School prompted a storm of protest from parents and students.

McPherson told the board that the budget approved by the General Assembly included several positives for the school system, including the composite index and reduced rates to the Virginia Retirement System.

The board also approved measures to keep nursing staff at its current level and restored funding for the in-school suspension program and teacher reimbursements for supplies. The board also restoring funding for school library clerks not required by the state’s standards of quality.

The School Board has scheduled a meeting for the adoption of the budget for Monday at 7 p.m. at the courthouse complex.
