RICHMOND—Southampton Academy’s baseball team fell behind early for the third straight game against Steward School here Wednesday, but unlike their previous two outings, the Raiders could not overcome the deficit.

Steward School scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Alex Aldredge accounted for four of the runs with a triple in the first inning and a three-run home run in the second.

The Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second but hit into a rally-ending double play.

Steward added a sixth run in the top of the third, and the Raiders finally broke through with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Will Edwards led off the inning with a single to left. With one out, Edwards advanced to second base and Wesley Barnes reached first on an infield error. Garrett Smith knocked in Edwards with a single to right-center. Barnes scored when Jacob Rose grounded out to the second baseman.

Steward increased the lead to 7-2 in the fifth inning on an infield error by the Raiders. The Raiders bounced back with one run in the bottom of the fifth when Barnes reached first base with a single. He then scored on an error by Steward.

Neither team could score in the last two innings, and Steward won 7-3.

Gary LeClair was the winning pitcher for Steward, and Rose was the losing pitcher for Southampton Academy. Blake Drewry pitched two strong innings for the Raiders, giving up one run, and Wesley Barnes pitched the final three innings and gave up only one run.

The Raiders slipped to 2-1 for the season.

SA travels to Kenston Forest on Friday and returns home to host Fuqua School at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
