WAKEFIELD—Southampton Academy’s baseball team opened the season with a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Tidewater Academy here Wednesday.

Garrett Smith and Cameron Ray combined to turn in a strong pitching performance, and the SA offense banged out 10 hits. The Raiders’ Cameron Ray, Jacob Rose, John Hinkle and Blake Drewry each had two hits, and Wesley Barnes and Garrett Smith each contributed one hit.

The Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, only to see the Warriors answer with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. The Raiders tied the score at 3-3 in the second when Blake Drewry scored on a sacrifice fly by Wesley Barnes.

The Warriors regained the lead in the third inning when Dillon Pearson scored on a single by Casey Rickmond and increased the lead to 5-3 when Josh Clarke scored on another single by Rickmond.

Rose started the comeback for the Raiders in the top of the sixth by hitting a double to right-center field with two outs. Hinkle followed with a single to drive in Rose and then scored on an infield error to tie the game at 5-5.

The Warriors tried to retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but rightfielder Carson Camp threw out the runner at the plate to end the inning. Drewry scored the winning run for the Raiders in the top of the seventh inning on a passed ball. Cameron Ray pitched the final two innings to shut down the Warriors and win the game.

The Raiders host Isle of Wight Academy today.
