C. Gene Matthews Sr.
NEWSOMS—Carlton Gene Matthews, Sr, 68, special husband, father and grandfather, died March 10, 2010.
Born in Colerain, N.C. to the late Lloyd Lathan and Corey Leggett Matthews, he was also predeceased by a sister, Magdalene Matthews and two brothers, Thomas and Alfred Matthews. Gene was a retired farmer, a member of S & S Hunt Club and a member of Barnes United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Nancy Parker Matthews; his son, Carlton Gene Matthews, Jr. (Laura) of Newsoms; two daughters, Gwen Matthews Johnson (Joseph) of Boykins and Debra Christine Matthews (David) of The Plains, Va.; two sisters, Janice Riddick (Eddie) of Edenton,
N.C. Rachel Conner (Linwood) of Aulander, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Matthews (Minerva) of Aulander, N.C. and Jesse Matthews (Jean) of Como, N.C.; Sister-in-law, Ola Ray Matthews of Aulander, N.C.; four grandchildren, Ashley Johnson Fowler (Wesley), Kelsey Beth Johnson, Eli Thomas Matthews, Carla Marie Matthews and one great-grandchild, Joseph Carter Fowler.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Darwin Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
