Isle of Wight Academy defeated Banner School 82-47 Wednesday night in the Virginia Independent Schools Division III boys’ basketball playoffs.

“We played about as well as we could play,” said Isle of Wight head coach Benjamin Vaughn. “We shot the ball extremely well.”

The second-seeded Chargers jumped out to an 11-3 lead with 4:10 left in the opening quarter and held a commanding 29-10 advantage after one frame.

“I thought we controlled the tempo of the game,” said Vaughn. “We ran when the opportunity was there, we were patient when we needed to be and that allowed us to shoot a high percentage on the night, especially in the first half.”

IWA began the second period with seven unanswered points before the 10th-seeded Bearcats were finally able to score with 5:10 left until halftime.

With 4:22 left in the period IWA’s Brandon Privette scored his 1,000th career point on a three-pointer, resulting in a 41-12 lead for the home team.

IWA led 44-21 at intermission.

“Privette is just a junior. He has made all-conference two years in a row,” said Vaughn. “He is a good shooter, especially when he gets hot from the three-point line, and tonight was one of those nights when he was hot. He has been a very valuable player for us for the two years that he has started for us. We depend on him in clutch situations.”

IWA led 73-29 after three quarters, and Vaughn pulled his starting lineup to begin the fourth period, not wanting to risk injury going into the semifinals of the playoffs.

Top players for IWA were Daniel Brown with 27 points and Privette with 23, including seven three-pointers. Brandon Black had 8 rebounds.

Top players for the Bearcats were Tyler Piper with 19 points and Ben Moreland with 12 points.

IWA will play the winner of Wednesday’s game between sixth-seeded Steward School and third-seeded Williamsburg Christian in the semifinals.

Tipoff will be at 1:45 p.m. Friday at Virginia State University in Ettrick.
