MURFREESBORO, N.C.—There’s a new administrator in town … for the time being.
On Tuesday, the Murfreesboro Town Council voted unanimously to appoint Hugh Montgomery as interim town administrator. Montgomery’s name came on a list of possible interim town administrators from the North Carolina League of Municipalities.
A native of Rockingham County, Montgomery now lives in Pittsboro. He attended Lees-McRae College in 1978 and earned a degree in business administration from UNC Greensboro in 1980. He earned a masters degree in 1985 from UNC Greensboro.
Montgomery said he has nearly 20 years worth of experience in managing small towns and is experienced with the challenges towns such as Murfreesboro face. His first administrative position came in Creedmore and he has held positions in Marshville, Ayden, Pitsboro and even had a previous stint as an interim in Murfreesboro in 1998.
“I’m looking forward to a seamless transition,” he said about his hopes for the new role. “Continuity is very important in a role as town administrator. No other level of government touches the people like local government”
Montgomery will replace Town Administrator Cathy Davison, who also was the former small business development manager for Franklin-Southampton Economic Development Inc. Davison accepted a city manager position in Steubenville, Ohio. Davison and her family will be leaving Murfreesboro today. She is scheduled to begin her new position in Ohio on March 15.
Montgomery said he welcomes citizens to visit him with their issues and their concerns. He added he will be in Murfreesboro on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the next six to eight weeks as he assists the council in the town’s business and their search for a new town administrator.
