Samuel Lee Britt, Sr., 80, a resident of Wakefield, died Friday, February 12, 2010 at his home. Born in Suffolk on November 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Thomas Lee and Lucy Atkins Britt.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Eunice Kitchen Britt; a son, Samuel Lee Britt, Jr. of Dinwiddie; two daughters, Cindi Britt Mason of Concord, and Sandra Britt Vasser of Wakefield; a sister, Betty Ann Banty and husband David, of Capron; a brother, Thomas Lee Britt, Jr. of Wakefield; four grandchildren, Sammy Britt III and wife, Lindsay, Christopher Terrell Mason and wife, Nina, Michelle Mason Spence and husband, David, and April Mason Stephens and husband, Jacob; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia B. Barham; and son-in-law, Terry Mason.
Sammy retired in 1987 after 40 years of service as Regional Engineer of Maintenance of Way for Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He was a US Army veteran serving a year in Germany. An avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, bluegrass musician (guitar and mandolin) and baseball and football fan. Sammy enjoyed life and especially enjoyed his family.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at 2:00 PM in Wakefield Cemetery by Rev. G.C. Branton III. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6-8PM at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield and other times at the residence.
