Courses at PDCCC help train area work force

Paul D. Camp Community College’s Division of Workforce Development provides a variety of training and educational options in Franklin, Smithfield and Suffolk.

Following are upcoming workforce courses scheduled at the college’s Regional Workforce Development Center in Franklin during February and March:

WORKFORCE OFFERINGS

HVAC 8000: Tradesman License

Renewal

This course covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, impacts on the job, general use, and special equipment included in the respective codes. The class meets on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $135.

BLDG 8000: Basic Contract Business

Licensing

Providing an overview of the statutes and regulations that govern contractor licensing in Virginia, this class meets Saturday, Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $175. This class is also scheduled for March 20, same time and price.

ELEC 8000: Electricians Tradesman

Renewal

Electricians obtaining or renewing a license must take three hours of continuing education in their field. This course covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, on- the-job impacts, general use, and special equipment included in the respective codes. The class meets on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $135 tuition, which includes a textbook.

ITEC 8031: Word 2007

This course focuses on the essentials of Word, including toolbars, dialog boxes, and creating, saving, editing, and formatting documents. Pre-requisite: Ability to use the mouse and an understanding of the basics of Windows XP. Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays, March 8-17, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $158. There is an additional fee for materials.

ITEC 8032: Excel 2007

Participants in this class will learn how to enter data, create formulas, copy and move data, and format numbers in a spreadsheet in order to perform calculations rapidly and accurately and create charts. Pre-requisite: Ability to use the mouse and an understanding of the basics of Windows XP. There is an additional fee for materials. Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays, 3-22 through 3-31, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $158.

PLMB 8000: Tradesman License

Renewal

Designed for plumbers obtaining or renewing a license who must take three hours of continuing education in their field, this course covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, impacts on the job, general use, and special equipment included in the respective codes. The tuition fee includes the cost for a textbook. This class meets Saturday, Feb. 13, 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $125.

PLMB 8001: Gas Fitters Tradesman Renewal

Gas fitters obtaining or renewing a license must take one hour of continuing education in their field. This class for gas fitters is intended for journeyman and master gas fitters, liquefied petroleum gas fitters, and natural gas fitters. It covers new definitions, code changes, general requirements, on-the-job impacts, general use, and special equipment included in the respective codes. The class meets Monday, March 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $75.

TRNS 8001: Motor Vehicle Dealer-Operator

Since 2006, the dealer-operator of any new independent motor vehicle dealership is required to complete a course of study before they are allowed to take the dealer-operator qualification test at any DMV Customer Service Center. The Virginia Community College System and the Virginia Independent Automobile Dealers Association have teamed up to present a two-day course that meets Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 23-24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $375.

In addition, RVH 130: Motorcycle Rider Safety for Beginners (a one-credit class) is scheduled for two times in March: Friday, March 19, from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, March 20-21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Friday, March 26 and Saturday-Sunday, March 27-29. The cost for each class is: $101.
