FRANKLIN—Thomas Fred Carter, Jr., 82, a retired furniture businessman passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at his home with his family by his side.
Tom joined his wife Sara in heaven — their final home. Their marriage of 60 years was a testament of their love of family. Born December 11, 1927 in Suffolk, VA and a long time Franklin resident, he was owner of Carter Furniture Store in Franklin.
He was predeceased by his wife Sara Carr Carter and was the eldest son of the late Thomas F. Carter, Sr. and Pearl Turner Carter. He was also predeceased by his brother, Lawrence S. Carter, Sr.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Thomas F. Carter, III; Dana C. Rountree and husband, William H. Rountree, Jr., Karen C. Dunn, and Brett S. Carter and wife, Michele O. Carter all from Suffolk, and Julie C. Griggs, and husband, John W. Griggs, Jr. of Franklin.
Grandchildren include Brandie Zelaya, Kristie Dailey, Jason Rountree, Scott Carter, Matthew Dunn, Alison Carter, Alisa Dunn, John Carter, Melissa Dunn, Caitlin Carter and Evan Griggs; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald E. Carter and wife, Edna Earle and David B. Carter and wife, Priscilla; sister, Carolyn C. Wright and husband, Wilbur; sister-in-law Marion W. Carter all of Suffolk, and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his large family and many friends.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Michael Ponder and the special home health care-givers for their loving care of our father.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, 206 West Fourth Ave, Franklin, Virginia and at other times at the residence at Homestead Lane.
A funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home. A burial will be held at Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, VA at 4:00 p.m.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Downtown Franklin Association, Inc., 120 S. Main St., Franklin, VA 23851.
