FRANKLIN—Mrs. Mary Eliza Cumbo, Roosevelt Avenue, Franklin, departed this life December 14, 2009, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, after a long illness.
Mrs. Cumbo was born May 2, 1929 in S.C.
Mrs. Cumbo was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where she served as a Missionary.
She retired from Union Camp Corporation, and later chose a career in Private Duty Nursing until her health failed.
Mrs. Cumbo was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Cumbo and one son, Prentis Cumbo.
Survivors include, three sons, Ernest Peterkin (Hessie) of Elgin, S.C., Preston Cumbo (Jean) of Philadelphia, Pa., Dwight Cumbo (Ruth) of Suffolk; three sisters, Thelma Brockington, Lizzie Jane York of Bennettsville, S.C. and Ernestine Ridley of Franklin; one step brother, Willie Ellison of Franklin; 11 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one aunt, Lucile Ingram of Highpoint, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Oberry Sherin; one adopted daughter, Beth Seamore, a special niece, Florita Shaw, nieces, nephews and many devoted friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009, Piney Grove Baptist Church, 1071 Carrsville Hwy., Franklin, VA with the pastor, the Rev. Alfred D. Brown, Sr. delivering the message.
The committal and benediction will be in Southview Cemetery. A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 224 South Main Street, Franklin.
