ISLE OF WIGHT—In a school known for its softball program, girls’ basketball at Isle of Wight Academy has struggled. The Lady Chargers are looking to turn it around this season with a young squad.
Leading the team is Chelsea Edwards, a standout junior point guard, who is averaging 12 points per game so far this season. “She is our go-getter and a high energy ball player,” said Chris Hooper, IWA head coach.
After Edwards, the experience drops off quickly. Other starters include shooting guard Sylvia Robbins; sophomore forward Mindy Webb, a new player; forward Lauren Byrd, a new player; and center Ally VanCampen.
Off the bench are seniors Casey Kerlin and Elizabeth Piotrowski.
“We are still young and very inexperienced at putting points on the board. We have a hard time scoring,” Hooper said.”
On offense, the lady Chargers will try to spread the floor and run motion. On defense, IWA will play man-to-man.
Hooper said the goal for IWA, which opened the season at 1-3, is to be as competitive as possible in the Metro Conference. He said several teams in the conference play in summer leagues and have AAU players.
“Realistically, we’d like to come in fifth or sixth. We are still learning to play the game. Many of the girls are softball players first.” Hooper said. “We are trying to teach them to be patient and to have as much fun as they can.”
