Community courses offer personal enrichment

Registration for Spring Semester 2010 continues. In addition to the traditional credit courses, a number of noncredit and credit community-service courses are available through the Division of Workforce Development. What better way to beat the post-holiday doldrums than to sign up for a class for pure personal enrichment.
Following are community-focused courses scheduled at the Workforce Development Center in Franklin:
Noncredit Courses
n ARTS 8011: Arts of Hapkido and Kumdo
This course features Hapkido, a traditional Korean Mixed Martial Art, which combines all of the strikes used in Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing, with the submission techniques found in Jujitsu and Aikido—and Kumdo, the Korean art of Sword.
This special class will be offered from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Tuesdays three different times: January 1 through Feb. 9 (ARTS 8011-01A); Feb. 16 through March 23 (ARTS 8011-02A); or March 30 through May 4 (ARTS 8011-03A). The cost for each class is $45.
n ITEC 8011: Computers for Absolute Beginners
Designed for beginners and senior citizens, this “slow and easy” introduction to computers is hands-on.
Participants learn the basics of word processing, email, and Internet for personal use.
Classes meet on Tuesdays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $50.
n ITEC 8036: Excel for Beginners
Designed for beginners and senior citizens, this “slow and easy” introduction to Microsoft Excel is hands-on. Participants learn the basics of using spreadsheets. (Pre-Requisite: Computers for Absolute Beginners).
Classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday, March 2 and 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The cost is $25.
n ITEC 8037: Word for Beginners
Also designed for beginners and senior citizens, this “slow and easy” introduction to Microsoft Excel is hands-on.
Participants learn the basics of word processing. (Pre-Requisite: Computers for Absolute Beginners). Classes met on Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 23 and 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25.
n RECR 8000: Dog Obedience
This course teaches dogs and their owners the basics of obedience (heel, sit, down, come, stay, and off).
In addition, owners will learn better communication with their pets for a happier, healthier relationship. Dog Requirements: Six-foot leash, training collar (type to be determined) and proof of rabies shot. Classes meet on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7
p.m., April 1 through April 29. The cost is $50.
Credit Offering
n RVH 130: Motorcycle Rider Safety for Beginners
This popular course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies. Requires include having a valid Virginia driver’s license and ability to ride a bicycle. Class size is limited to 12 participants.
The class is offered three times: Friday, March 19 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. and Saturday/ Sunday, March 20-21, from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. (RVH 139-01A); Friday, March 26 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. and Saturday/ Sunday, March 27-28, from 7:45 am to 3 p.m. (RVH 139-02A); and Friday, May 7 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. and Saturday/ Sunday, May 8-9, from 7:45 am to 3 p.m. (RVH 139-03A).
The cost of each class is $101 (instate).
In addition to the above-captioned noncredit offerings, the following courses are scheduled for other locations:
n ARTS 8009: Digital Camera Basics
This beginning course is offered two times at the College’s Smithfield Center on Wednesdays, Jan. 20 and 27 (ARTS 8009-019)— and Tuesdays, Feb. 8 and 15 (ARTS 8009-29), 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost for each course is $45.
n ITEC 8011: Computers for Absolute Beginners
Previously described above, this course is also offered at the Smithfield Center on Wednesdays, Jan. 21 through Feb.17, from 10 a.m. to noon—and at the Suffolk Workforce Center (157 North Main Street) on Thursdays from Jan. 21 through Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The cost for each class is $50.
