Southampton High School football standout Andrew Rawls was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Southside District.

Rawls, a 6-foot-1 senior, made first team All-District on both offense and defense in a vote by league coaches. The two-way standout played running back and defensive back for the Indians.

“He’s a good football player and a good young man,” said retiring SHS Head Coach Littleton Parker.

Southampton junior offensive tackle Kenneth Lewis, a 6-foot-7, 285-pounder, also made the All-District first team.

“He did an outstanding job for us this year, and he’s also an outstanding young man,” Parker said.

Both Lewis and Rawls now are nominated for All-Region consideration.

The Indians, 4-6, recently completed their first season in the Southside District after competing for many years in the Bay Rivers District.
