Kermit U. Lewis
PORTSMOUTH—Kermit Uriah “Billy” Lewis, died Nov. 16, 2009, at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.
He was born in Portsmouth on Dec. 4, 1944, the only child of the late Kermit Percy Lewis and Mable O. Lewis.
At an early age, he joined Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Mr. Lewis graduated from I.C. Norcum High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University.
He retired from AMSEC, LLC, Hampton, after many years of dedicated service as a structure engineer. He was a past Master of the Doric Masonic Lodge No. 98 and a dedicated member of the Cheroenhaka Nottaway Tribe, Southampton County.
His genealogy traces back to Patsy Turner and Bede Artis Brown.
A loving husband, father and friend, he was a true people-person.
Survivors include a loving wife, Brenda Savage-Lewis; two sons, Gunners Mate Third Class Kermit Ashleigh Lewis III of Louisville, Ky., and Darryl L. Lewis of Portsmouth; two stepdaughters, Tara Johnson of Smithfield and Taumeka Carter of Newport News; one stepson, Kelby Johnson of Suffolk; two stepgrandchildren, Zion Carter and Jordan Price; five uncles, one aunt, his mother-in-law, Eunice Savage; three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, a special friend, George Grant and many cousins, other relatives and friends.
A homegoing service was to be held at Celestial Baptist Church, 1439 Mount Vernon Ave., Portsmouth, Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Leon Boone.
Burial was to be in the Brown Cemetery, Franklin. Corprew Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
