Cool weather and some rain sprinkles didn’t stop women and others with a purpose on Saturday.

The Heroes For Families Annual 5k Balloon Run/Walk, co-sponsored by the Women of Purpose and the Franklin Department of Parks and Recreation, was held on the track at Franklin High School. The walk raised money to support single-parent families with college expenses. Marc Finney of St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville and a member of the Brunswick Board of Supervisors served as the grand marshal and led the opening of the walk/run. Michelle Jones-Finney and students of the single parent program of St. Paul’s College were special guests at the event.

The Rev. Abigail Outlaw served as the mistress of ceremonies for the awards ceremony and Elder H. Montgomery gave the welcome to all present. After the names of the winners were announced, the rally speaker was introduced by Elder Montgomery. The motivational speech was given by Dr. Charlene Freeman-Coker of Suffolk who was the founder of the single-parent support program at St. Paul’s College.
