Samuel E. Pope Jr.
DREWRYVILLE—Samuel E. Pope Jr., 68, husband of the late Jeanne Westbrook Pope died Nov. 7, 2009, in a Richmond hospital after a brief illness.
Born on March 12, 1941, he was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and son of the late Samuel E. Pope Sr. and Sara White Pope.
Survivors include three sons, Christopher W. Pope and wife Rachel, Jeffrey W. Pope and wife Stephanie and Mark F. Pope and wife, Kimberly; grandchildren Morgan, Harrison, Mason, Avery, Tripp, and Anne Jackson; two sisters, Anne Kitchen and Nancy Robertson.
He was predeceased by his oldest son, Samuel E. Pope III.
Mr. Pope was a 1963 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in agricultural engineering.
While at VPI, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, the German Club and was inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa Society.
A retired Southampton County farmer, Sam was active in many civic and church affairs throughout his life.
He was a community leader in the field of agriculture and served on numerous committees and boards relating to agricultural industries, at Southampton Academy and with the Drewryville United Methodist Church. He was a U. S. Army veteran.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Pope Family Cemetery, Royal Oak Farm, Drewryville.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Chris and Rachael Pope following the service on Friday afternoon.
Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Southampton Academy, 26495 Old Plank Road, Courtland VA 23837.
