Some notes and news from last week’s sporting events:

Isle of Wight Academy finished its regular season undefeated at 9-0. The Chargers now have a week off before hosting a VISAA Division III state playoff game on Nov. 13. IWA head coach Dale Chapman said after last Friday night’s win over Southampton Academy that the Chargers’ goal all season was to take the number one spot in the state so they could stay at home.

“We are going to be absolutely ready as we can be. That was one of the goals that we wanted to do. We don’t want to go to Roanoke. We don’t want to go to Richmond. We want to play that game at home and it will be tough,” Chapman said.

Southampton Academy gave IWA everything it had in the 21-14 loss. The Raiders have been shorthanded all season.

“My hats off to coach Marks. They did a great job with 17 guys,” Chapman said.

“We had a little disadvantage. We dressed 17 or 18 guys tonight and some of them played both ways,” said Dale Marks, SA head coach. “They had a couple of big plays and we didn’t convert on some third and shorts in the second half and that was the difference in the ball game.”

Marks also praised IWA.

“They’ve got a good team. There is a reason they are undefeated and No. 1 in the state. They have a good coaching staff and a winning tradition,” Marks said.

Ironically, if Southampton Academy beats Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Friday, the Raiders might be traveling to IWA for the first round of the playoffs.

When Windsor defeated Surry County last Friday, the talk in the press box was that no one could remember how long it had been since the Dukes beat the Cougars.

Former Windsor soccer player Timmy Songer, a sophomore at Randolph College, led the team in scoring this year with 16 points (7 goals and 2 assists). Songer’s final goal of the season lifted Randolph to a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite University in the regular season finale. Randolph finished the season at 6-9-4.

Chowan University dropped its final football game of the season, 28-18 to St. Augustine’s College. The Hawks ended the season at 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the CIAA.

The Chowan volleyball team fared much better. The Lady Hawks ended the regular season with a 23-8 overall record and 14-1 in their first year of CIAA play. For their efforts, the Lady Hawks were the CIAA Western Division champs.
