CREWE—Despite a 116 yard rushing night by Andre Rawls, Southampton fell to Nottoway 20-7 in a Southside District football game Friday night.

Southampton actually took a 7-6 lead with 6:40 left in the first half, when Rawls bolted for a 2-yard touchdown run and Luis Lino booted the extra point. The Cougars scored the final two touchdowns of the game for the win.

The Indians (3-5, 2-3) had their chances to keep the game closer. Rawls rushed 88 yards for what looked like a touchdown, but the run was called back on a holding penalty.

At the end of the first half, Southampton had the ball on the Nottoway 2 yard line. But when Billy Nixon tried to stop the clock with 5 seconds to play in the half, officials said Nixon fumbled instead of spiked the ball, and the Indians coughed it up.

Nixon was 2-for-12 for 22 yards and two interceptions.

Southampton had 173 yards total offense and Nottoway had 239 yards total offense.

Southampton hosts Greensville County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the Indians’ home finale.
