QUANTICO—In a must-win situation, Southampton Academy took care of business with a 51-20 win over Quantico in a non-conference football game Friday night.
Coming into the game, the Raiders were tied for 6th in the state in the VISAA Division III poll. Quantico was ranked fourth. SA needed to keep pace for a possible state playoff spot. Only the top four teams in the division make the playoffs.
Six different players scored touchdowns for Southampton Academy has the Raiders’ running game rolled up 516 yards rushing yards. Due to injury and illness, Southampton Academy dressed only 17 players.
Leading the Southampton Academy (8-1) offense was David Bogese with 10 rushes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, Michael Milteer with six rushes for 124 yards, John Hinkle with seven rushes for 88 yards, Marlin McClelland with 69 yards on 10 rushes, and Jacob Rose with 55 yards on five carries.
SA led 24-6 at the half and scored on all three of its first half possessions. The Raiders punted just once in the game.
“We ran the ball very well tonight and the blocking was very good,” said Dale Marks, Southampton Academy head coach. We would have thrown the ball more if we wanted to because they were stacking the line. We were doing a lot of stuff inside and outside. We just kept the ball on the ground.”
Southampton Academy’s next two games are also against top 3 teams. The Raiders host Isle of Wight Academy Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and then play at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot on November 6. Both are key Virginia Commonwealth Conference games.
