Nola T. Matthews
CARRSVILLE—Nola T. Matthews, 79, died Oct. 14, 2009, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.
Born in Southampton County, she retired in 1995 after 25 years of service as an outreach worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Health.
She attended Pulaski Baptist Church of Carrsville where she was a member of Senior Missionary Circle, the Pastor’s Aide, and the Senior Choir.
Her early education was in the Southampton County Public School system and her secondary education was obtained from I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth.
Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by eight daughters, Jean Ballard of Chesapeake, Carolyn Matthews-Sherman of Woodbridge, Cynthia Matthews of Danville, Gayle Sheppard of Virginia Beach, Chrystal Sellers of Suffolk and Kimberly Matthews-Williams of Silver Spring, Md.; son, Dennis L. Matthews Sr. of Franklin; sister, Essie T. Daughtery of Carrsville; 12 grandchildren, Tony, Sean, Dennis Jr., Pamela, Jonathan, James, Ronald, Brandon, Jonathan, Michael, Erica and Daniel; one brother-in-law, Theodore Matthews of Franklin; four sisters-in-law, Eunice Daniels of Virginia Beach, Nellie Simmons and Elizabeth Holloway, both of Carrsville, and Jessie Parker of Franklin; a step sister- in-law, Freddie Adkins of Suffolk; great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral was held Monday in Pulaski Baptist Church, Carrsville, with Dr. R.E. Rodgers presiding.
The body will be placed in the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for viewing Monday.
Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin, handled the arrangements.
