Tate J. Bailey Sr.
WAVERLY—Tate J. Bailey Sr., was born in Waverly on May 14, 1918, to the late Presiding Elder Watt J. and Annie Bailey. He died Oct. 8, 2009.
Mr. Bailey was a long-time resident of Waverly, and lived briefly in Virginia Beach, Smithfield and Portsmouth.
He attended the Sussex County Public Schools.
He was the father of four children which where born through his union with the late Sarah J. Bailey.
He was also a widower of the late Vera Bailey.
He was a devoted father and friend to many who knew him. He was a long-time member of Piney Grove AME Zion Church; several years in membership at Greater Faith AME Zion Church, and a brief membership with Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church.
He made a rededication of his life to Jesus Christ during his mid-life years.
He was employed for many years at Smurfit Stone Container in Hopewell from which he retired in February 1984.
Survivors include his two daughters, Ernestine Dennis of Houston and Viola B. Williams of Laurelton, N.Y.; two sons Tate J. Bailey Jr. (Gloria) of Virginia Beach and Ralph M. Bailey (Shenetta) of Smithfield; seven grandchildren; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
The homegoing celebration will be held at Piney Grove AME Zion Church Waverly, at noon on Thursday. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Shivers Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.
