Broncos prep for Cougars

With the season now more than half over, Franklin High School begins the Tri-Rivers District football schedule looking for a final playoff push.

The Broncos will host Surry County at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Although Surry has a 1-5 record, and has lost three straight games, the Cougars have had a tough non-conference schedule, including West Point, Colonial Beach, Lancaster, Smithfield and Grafton (all losses).

The Cougars feature Montel White at quarterback, a player that Franklin head coach Darren Parker calls a threat.

“They have some good size and they have some speed. They are a very well coached team,” Parker said. “We’re going to prepare for them just like anybody else. We have to put in an offensive, defensive and special teams game plan to make sure we execute and play on our level.”

Parker said district games are preparation for the post-season.

“The only games left are district games. Every week we are preparing for December,” he said. “We are not overlooking anybody. Right now, they (Surry) are the biggest threat because they are the next game.”

In other action Friday night:

Windsor (3-3) opens its Tri-Rivers District schedule with a game at Charles City at 7 p.m. Charles City, despite a 1-4 record, is much improved over last season.

The Panthers scored 76 points against Acardia and lost to West Point by just 1 point.

Charles City comes into Friday night’s contest with a 21-8 loss to Rappahannock.

Southampton (2-3) travels to Powhatan in a Southside District matchup at 7:30 p.m. Powhatan (5-0) has allowed just 27 points all season and is coming off a 51-8 win over Greensville County last week.

Southampton Academy (6-1) will host Carlisle School in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.

The Raiders have won three straight.

Carlisle is 1-6 and had to forfeit last Friday night’s contest to Pope John Paul The Great because of player sickness.

Tidewater Academy (0-6) plays at Quantico at 7 p.m. Quantico is 6-1 and is averaging over 38 points per game.

Isle of White Academy has a bye week.
