Chowan gets first win of season

SALISBURY, N.C.-In a game that featured two teams looking for their first season win, it was the Chowan University Hawks who came away with the W in the win column Saturday afternoon at Livingstone.

Chowan used a balanced offensive attack to take a 42-33 win over the Blue Bears. The Hawks picked up their first win of 2009 and moved to 1-6 overall, 1-3 in conference play. The Blue Bears head into week eight of the season still looking for a win at 0-7 and 0-4 in league play.

Chowan gained 546 yards of offense in the game, with 352 coming in the air and 194 coming from their ground attack. C.J. Westler threw for 352 yards on 24 completions. He tossed four touchdowns in the game, hitting three different receivers. J.J. Spates rushed for a career-high 117 yards on 20 carries in the win while also grabbing three passes for 41 yards.

Robert Holland continued to play well for Chowan with eight catches and 81 yards, while Josh Barrett caught five passes for 135 yards and two scores.

Defensively Tony Goodman had six tackles. Goodman also returned a kick off 84 yards for a touchdown. Greg Palmer and Jeremy Bednardz-Gray each had five tackles in the game.

Chowan will host its final three games of the season at home, starting with Shaw University, who was upset by Fayetteville State on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Saturday at Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro, N.C.
