Windsor pounds Firebirds

WINDSOR — Windsor High School can celebrate their homecoming after they dominated the Arcadia 56-6 Friday night in a non-district contest. The Dukes were led by sophomore running back R.J. Edwards who had an average of over 16 yards per carry.

The Dukes’ defense made a big stop early as they forced a fumble on only the Firebirds second offensive play of the game on the Arcadia 23 yard line.

After an offsides penalty against the Firebirds, the Dukes started their offensive drive at the 18-yard line. After only three plays, the Dukes scored their first time on the night off a 15-yard rush by Edwards. The extra point attempt by kicker Jacob Mosley was no good, leaving the score at 6-0 with 9:15 left in the first quarter.

The Dukes’ offense came back onto the field after a quick three and out possession by the Firebirds. They were able to score on the first play of the possession off a 75-yard rush by Edwards. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good leaving the score at 12-0 with 7:06 left in the first quarter.

The Dukes’ third offensive drive was much of the same, with quarterback David Cooper having a 17-yard rush that set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Edwards. Oris Bowers was able to punch in the 2-point conversion run to make the score 20-0 with 3:23 left in the first quarter.

The Dukes offense came back onto the field with 2:05 left in the first quarter, after another three and out defensive stand. The Dukes scored off of a 24-yard touchdown pass from Cooper to tight end Austin Winkles on the third play of the drive. Cooper was able to run in the 2-point conversion run to make the score 28-0 with: 24.3 seconds left in the first quarter.

Windsor began their next possession on their own 49-yard line after a 5-yard offsides penalty against the Firebirds. The 51-yard drive lasted only 2:07 and was capped off by a 27-yard rush by Cooper.

The extra point attempt was no good leaving the score 34-0 with 6:53 left in the half.

Windsor defensive back C.J. Little ran an interception back 52 yards for a touchdown. Mosley’s extra point attempt was good, making the score 41-0 with 6:33 left in the half.

“I like to see the defense score. That’s nice defense played well. We are trying to get all aspects of the game better. Each week we work on all three parts of the game,” said Chuck Parrish, Windsor head coach.

Windsor was able to score one more time before halftime off a 42-yard run that capped off a 78-yard drive. Mosley’s extra point attempt was good making the score 48-0 with 1:16 left in the half.

Arcadia scored its lone touchdown in the third quarter when Donovan threw a 35-yard pass to Ballard. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good leaving the score 48-6.

The Dukes were led offensively by Edwards with 130 yards rushing. Cooper had 7 rushes for 96 yards, and Jahfur Eure had 13 rushes for 71. The Dukes’ defense was able to hold the Firebirds to only 79 yards of offense.

The Dukes begin their district competition next week as they go on the road to play Charles City on Friday at 7 p.m.
